Big Picture Grand prize Winner – I am really pleased and proud to announce that my image ‘Hare ball’ has been named as the Grand Prize winner of the 2020 Big Picture Photography competition, arguably one of the most prestigious wildlife and conservation photography competitions in the world. You’d only have to look at the selection of judges on this year’s panel, and previous years, to see why. One of my all-time favourite photographers, the legend that is @daisygilardini was on the judging panel this year with the panel itself chaired by leading US wildlife photographer and conservation champion @suzieszterhas. Of course, there remains an inordinate amount of luck required for one’s image to be recognised in such a way, especially when you look through the other images that featured in this year’s competition (link in my bio) and so I am so grateful that in the subjective world of photography the judges saw something with which they connected. That the winning image features the legend that is Lady, arguably my favourite ever mountain hare, is even more heartening. I have to say as well though that it is you, the Instagram/Facebook audience to whom I owe the biggest debt of gratitude. This after all was an image that I had essentially overlooked, by-passed for more obvious images yet you all saw something in it, in her. When I posted this image originally on Instagram it became my second most popular image of the last 12 months and so, to each and every one of you that liked, commented or shared the original post, thank you, I would not have ‘seen’ this image otherwise. A big shout also goes to my great mates @kevmorgans and @ewancphotography who were with me on that incredible day, Ewan’s own version of this encounter being awarded in Asferico earlier in the year, and to my dear friend @gemma.veronica who so graciously accepted the offer of borrowing my beautifully warm @fjallravenofficial coat ?
